Was John Wayne A Legend?

He was the ultimate masculine cool tough guy.

A total icon

He did so many films, true he was clearly more comfortable in westerns as most of his films were westerns, however he did some great war films, The Sands Of Iwo Jima (1949) is a classic.

Of course he is mostly known for Westerns such as his Oscar winning performance in True Grit (1969), also reprised the role in Rooster Cogburn (1975)

I believe his best performance to be The Shootist (1976), his final film

Until crap gay actors like Brando came along, Wayne and other actors were the biggest stars, Brando was very feminine and not great or a legend like Wayne, I guess times change.

There are no actors like John Wayne today.

Was he a legend?

*Disappointed sigh* I yearn for the day you are no longer on this site. "crap gay actors like Brando." Do you flip flop with your opinion on Brando every week or something? One day you are praising him as one of the greatest actor ever, then you say he's gay so he sucks (which is stupid enough right there), then you say he's great again.

People like you are why I am disappointed at humanity at times.

His great work was, like a lot of mediocre actors, nearly always with a great director to guide him, obviously Ford and Hawks (though I've always felt Hawks too was overrated).

Better western actors were Joel McRea, Van Heflin, John Payne, Randolph Scott, Glenn Ford, Mitchum, Alan Ladd, Walter Huston...

Many of the great actors in westerns were also great actors in noirs.
