Question:
A question for everyone to think about?
2007-05-14 11:52:08 UTC
when you are eating out with others (friends, family, etc), do you begin eating when your food arrives or do you wait for everyone to start at the same time? Why? Is it rude to begin eating before everyone else? Are you going to race to see who finishes first, so better give them a sporty chance?

The proper etiquette is to wait until everyone has been served before you begin dining. When it's a large group (more than 6 people), you can begin eating once most of the people have been served. It's done so that everyone is eating and finishing at about the same time. That way, you're not just staring at other people while they eat or having them stare at you while you eat.

I try to wait until their food arrives so that we may eat together. It is considered rude to eat while the other person is watching and waiting for their food. If there was an error in the order and you both know that it will take a while, the other person should tell you to go ahead. If they don't, I think it would be perfectly fine to say, do you mind if I start eating? But I don't know that Emily Post would agree.

I was always taught that if in a small group, 5-7 people, wait until everyone gets their food before eating. The exception is if being served soup, then you can eat as soon as it is served. When in a large crowd you can begin because your food may get cold while waiting for everyone else to be served.

i wait for everyone else to get their food. it is rude to eat in front of someone and not wait for them. generally all of our food comes out at the same time but i have been a few places where it does not. i always wait.

I wait for everyone to start eating. It's the way I was raised. I was taught that it was rude to start eating before everyone else.

I say its a pretty crappy restaurant if all the food isn't delivered at the same time but if you do get your food first simply ask can i start now or would you like me to wait. I always let people start eating there food right away other wise it will get cold yuck!
2007-05-14 11:55:52 UTC
I like to wait until everyone gets their food, I even do that at home. I guess that is just the way that I was raised. I don't think that it is rude if someone doesn't wait, I just like to

I usually wait until everyone has their food, even when with family. Usually someone will tell you to go ahead, don't wait. Then it's okay to start eating.

I just dig in right when the food comes. I don't care about waiting for others.

I'm always the last to finish eating, though, and that doesn't really matter to me. I enjoy my food.

In my culture, it is rude to start a meal without waiting for elders to start first and in family gatherings it is most likely that we have to wait til everyone has seated before we begin.

With friends of similar age however its tuck in! I'm not going to sit there smelling my food!? Food is to be eaten not to be stared at!

i always wait for the other people to get their food before i dig in. i think it's rude if you receive your food before them and start eating right in front of your friends or family. it's called "manners".
2007-05-14 11:55:32 UTC
It's good manners to wait. UNLESS-like happened the other night at a retirement dinner, the host said to begin because we had 32 people.
2007-05-14 11:55:11 UTC
I like to wait for everyone's food to arrive because if you finish early then it rushes the other people to eat their food fast which could cause problems like indigestion: heartburn, acid reflux...

If I'm with family or with someone I'm dating, I'll wait. But when I'm out with a group of military coworkers, we all just eat when we get our food.

I eat when my food comes. The only time I would wait is if I were at a formal business dinner.

So it all depends with whom you are eating.

Why wait, most restaurants have slow service any way, and if you wait any longer, the food just gets colder.
