Guys and girls should i believe him when he said he's trying? Need your opinions please?

Question

This guy i like told me indirectly last week that i should ask him out, and yeah, i asked him out after a week, told him i really really like him. But then he said he considers me only as a friend. I asked why he said he likes me more than a friend before!
He said:"Sorry, i shouldn't have said that! Im sorry to hurt you"
Me:"Im so much hurt, i cried a lot, there are only two choices, either like me back or give me a solution"
He:"Yeah, first choice is a good one. I'll try it..i'll give it a chance. I'll try to see you as more than a friend. But promise me you wont stop talking to me if i dont feel that way even after trying. And i'll try sincerely, im not just saying to make you happy"

Now, the problem is, did he just say that just to make me feel better? Is he giving me false hopes??
I chat with him on msn for 5hrs everyday. Need your opinions please?
