Why does madonna have a large fan base?

I was born on 90s and I dont know what was going on when Madonna ruled music industry. I heard madonna always act as a diva and showed up late to her concert. Why does she have a large fanbase with such attitude? I like some of her songs

I like her attitude, and she has a point on showing late to her concerts. She's always nice with her fans, I went to her concert, and she was always talking to the fans in the Golden Triangle. And she has a large fan base because she and Michael basically invented Pop music. She's a legend.

I would bet money on her not having nearly as many fans today that she had in the 80's
