Question:
Why do rappers do this...?

I'm not racist...if it were white rappers (which it IS too, actually) doing this, I would be just as sickened...

Why do they move their arms and hands so much like they're paddling water or picking cotton or whatever?

Is this really necessary, is it a requirement in that culture to be considered worthy, or cool?

Thumbs down me all you want, but you know as well as I do that it's ignorant. And what's with the big 'ole "bling" necklass? How can you stand a fricken 2 pound weight dangling around your neck?

Hey, it works. If they didn't sell CD's they wouldn't be doing it. Ask youself instead - why are people buying into this?

What's that about? They meve just like normal people. there are ppl out there that move their hands alot when they talk. Like Bush. Is it necessary for him to move his hands as much as he does when he's making a speech? I don't think so. Why don't you question that? You don't even notice do you. Stop nit picking. Sounds racist to me hun! Just the the girl a few comments up said. you would have even thought to compare it to picking cotton if you weren't thinking like that. Different cultures do different things. Why do rockers stick out their tongues and jump around crazy? Cuz the moves go along to the music.. Why do poets snap? Cuz it's like giving applause without being loud, a part of their culture. They can;t exactly dance too much while rapping, it's just a way to vibe with the song. As for the whole you know what I'm saying thing, why do you let that bother you. There are alot of phrases like that not just in rap either. Get a clue dude. I used to believe there was no such thing as a stupid question till I read this one!

I guess I don't watch enough rap videos to know what you're talking about. I usually change the channel at the first sound of a rap song playing. The "bling" is supposed to represent financial status. And I guess because they think its cool. But the funny thing is, most all of them rent the jewelry used in their videos or when they go to award shows. So it's like... yeah ok, you're bada** with your rented jewelry.

I think you have a point here orangesforben,i mean look at the responses you got, there must be some truth too it? My question is why do they have all have bouncing cars and chrome spinners? What about the naked chicks with the flabby rears? Its all about image, sex, wealth and seeing if they can look more retarded flailing around like bimbos than the next rapper! Ya this is for you whities too!

Don't know why but can tell you that they keep on adding this things to videos and for what ever reason they sell a lot!!

Now I may not understand the whole thing but the fact that they are making way more money than you, me and my company put together I do give them some respect, fool!!

Rappers move their hands to keep in with the beat of the music. They will move it a certain way in tune with the lyrics they spit. The whole 'bling' is to remind them of slavery. When they were tied up with chains. The whole baggy clothes trend is also to remind them of slavery, they were given old torn up clothes that didnt fit them. It is sort of like what they came from and what they are now.

I think they have so many drugs in them and their body is just racing and they need to move around a lot. I guess if your were all coked up you would be paddling water or picking cotton in the feild.

It's "necklace" ;and people will change and cultures and generations tend to do what is popular at the time. Just check out older generations and fashions and dance and music. The majority will be in similar fashion.

Anything to look, sound, be cool. They seem that way to others like themselves, and those who are weak of mind...followers. To the rest of us they appear to be nothing more than idiots flailing about like fish out of water. Somebody please tell me when this loud music, baggy clothes, pants falling down, underpants showing, bling teeth wearing generation will get some sense, pull up their pants, sit down and shut up. Whew! I'm stepping off my soap box now. Thank you.

WOW... first off .. it's "N-E-C-K-L-A-C-E"... as far as the arms waving.. it is entertainment.. it's to get the crowd excited.. the crowd feeds of the artists energy... why do metal bands bang their heads... what the hell is slam dancing... every genre has it's own thing... and for the record... Eminem, House of Pain, Beastie Boys, Insane Clown Posse (yes they count)... they all do it... so to make the statement that you are not racist.. you sound like an IDIOT... rap is NOT black music.. dumbass...

I think they are trying to fly, that's why they flap there arms. As for the 2 pound chain they wear, well maybe they are wearing it to workout their neck; what other possible reason is there to wear such a stupid looking thing?

Better question is why does it bother you so much how other people are moving their hands?

It is the same thing as country singers wearing tight pants or cowboy boats, rockers wearing black and having tattoos or ballet dancers wearing tights....

It is what it is, let it go.

umm my guess on the hand thing is to like keep beat or tempo, or maybe to mimic the dj's. the chain's, well i guess it's just there way of expressing themselves so i wouldn't really call it ignorant. i wouldnt be able to take one of those heavy chains though...

It's what sets them out as rappers... its their trademark, just the same as rock guitarists holding their instrument at weird angles and head banging... race has nothing to do with it, it's da musik!

when people talk, they move their hands around. so since rapping is basically talking, they move their hands. its all body language.

you say you are not racist and then you specifically use the imagery of picking cotton - which it looks nothing like...

you might want to rethink your idea of racism...sounds like you are the ignorant one...
