Are they alive when they're blowing around?

The rolling around of a tumbleweed is a seed dispersal mechanism. The plant grows, flowers, goes to seed, and becomes brittle. Wind then causes the plant to snap off of its roots (or in some cases, the roots are just pulled out of the ground) and the whole thing goes rolling around, dropping seeds all along it's path.

Yes, his name is Billy Joe Tumbleweed and he lives down the street from me. He was alive the last time I saw him. He really needs to stop "blowing around" before he catches something bad.

When you're breastfeeding it gets quite dry 'down there'. I thought I saw a tumbleweed come flying out once or twice.

Yes, I use to live in Arizona and New Mexico. No they are not alive when they're blowing around. It is funny to see people who get them, stack them up and spray paint them white and make snowmen out of them during the Christmas season. lol

I have seen them alive and green planted into the ground. When they die that is when they are blown around because the roots die. There is no way for them to absorb moisture.

No. Tumbleweed grow green, like a bush. They flower, the seeds mature, then the plant dies. Then, they begin to blow, dropping seeds along the way.
