its very admirable you want to start a business. My dad owned a manufacturing business for over 50 years and I've owned my net business for more than 10 (i dont produce products though. I market and sell products for manufacturers).

Business ownership is the ONLY way to live.

But i admire all those to strive to become business owners.

The trick is choosing the right one

But.... I know how a "cup cake" business is going to end. Its going to end with you tossing your last batch into a wall and the bill collectors ducking.. .glad to have been missed by it.

In order for pillsbury (and similar dried goods companies) to become successful selling cakes, they had to sell the ABILITY to make cakes and cupcakes to housewives out of their own homes. And that is who your biggest competitor is: dried goods manufacturers and housewives themselves. Your biggest competitor is.. the people you are hoping to sell to: housewives saying to their kids "do you want to lick the bowl?" ... "yaaaaayyy!!!!!". You are competing with smiling children's faces staring into the oven window for 25 minutes.

Me personally.. I'd sell recipe books of cupcakes before cupcakes themselves. Recipe books are easier to ship and there is less liability from hazards like food poisoning and allergic reactions of customers.

But thats just me. I'd sell my recipes and then of course.. I would sell cake baking accessories for the backend sale (cake molds and stuff. Molds with unique designs/shapes that I would create or get from suppliers).

But.. this is the internet era. People dont BUY recipes anymore (in theory. I haven't researched the recipe selling business).

But... if you insist on trying to sell a product that people can make twice the amount of in their own homes for less money.......

I would name it "Cup THIS, Bill collectors! [SPLAT]".
