I was forced to take piano lessons when I was in the second or third grade, and had taken them for several years since then.  I'm still not that good at the piano.  At one point I had a piano teacher who looked just like Mrs. Doubtfire.  She asked me, "What kind of music do you like, dear?"  I told her I enjoyed pop, rock, and some classical.  "Wonderful!  I'll bring some new music on my next visit!"  Next lesson, sure enough, she brought some music.  The newest song in the collection was "I love you truly".  Great.  Just great.  I dreaded piano lessons.

Piano at 12. Did not have a choice at school. The teacher put me in for Piano even though I said I'd like to learn the violin like my friends but there wasn't enough space.

No.  I tried the drums and trumpet as a kid and failed at both.  The teacher I tried drums with told me flatly "You can't keep a beat...which is the entire point of the drums." and encouraged me to give up.  Which I did.

Nothing virtuoso.

I can actually play piano reading sheet music, but with any form of guitar I have to go tablature - which means I have to have heard the song at least once.

I've not done much drumming, but seems instinctive because it is fun - other than the really technical jazz drumming where the music keeps switching speed - THAT kind of drumming I wouldn't be very great at without a lot of rehearsing.

Anyway, I started learning piano when I was about 15.

I'm not concert-level at all, but can play it.

For whatever reason the black-and-white keys are easier to memorize as far as what notes they represent, vs. a dim wooden fretboard where everything looks the same, but changes depending on which string is struck.

Piano keys just repeat themselves, but go higher in octave the further right you go.

I'm not sure if these count as still playing, but I played alto sax in the school band, starting at age 12, ending at age 23.  Haven't touched it much, since.

Around age 35, I started carrying a harmonica and playing it.  I don't carry it, anymore - a cell phone holster now goes where the harmonica holster used to.

I don't really play the piano, but at age 56, I learned enough to play an accompaniment while singing a song for my wife on our anniversary.

Trumpet in 4th grade.  The music teacher said my jaw and lip structure was more suited to the trombone, but I wanted to be a trumpet player....this was the mid-60's when Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass was big.

By the time I got to 7th grade, I'd switched to the baritone horn (it's like an undersized tuba...photo below), and in 9th grade, I was playing trombone for the marching and jazz bands.

If I tried to play now, I'd probably pass out from the effort.

This may sound silly, but I'm not sure these days.

I started playing guitar when I was about 13 (a good few years ago!), being "a child of the 60s"). Nowadays I don't own a guitar so don't know if that counts. But I did pick up my friend's guitar about 5 years ago, and my fingers fell in to the chord shapes very easily.

It's much the same with the trumpet - which I used to play in public quite regularly. I can still play a basic scale and a few simple tunes, but the tone isn't there, and I wouldn't inflict my playing on the public these days.

Self-taught, I play guitar, bass & make rational noise on keyboards.  I began at 15.  I understand sheet music a bit.  I can read the notes, but not how it makes the tempo.  I play by "ear."
