There are so many problems (for society) that go with the death penalty. Facts speak for themselves (sources below). By the way, toastedoats, syaila and boxerslife are wrong on costs.

129 people on death rows have been released with proof that they were wrongfully convicted. DNA, available in less than 10% of all homicides, can’t guarantee we won’t execute innocent people.

The death penalty doesn't prevent others from committing murder. No reliable study shows the death penalty deters others. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in those that don’t.

Life without parole, on the books in 48 states, also prevents reoffending. It means what it says, and spending 23 of 24 hours a day locked in a tiny cell is not a picnic. Life without parole costs less than the death penalty.

The death penalty is much more expensive than life in prison, mostly because of the upfront costs of legal process which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people. (upfront=before and during the initial trial)

The death penalty isn't reserved for the worst crimes, but for defendants with the worst lawyers. It doesn't apply to people with money. When is the last time a wealthy person was on death row, let alone executed?

The death penalty doesn't necessarily help families of murder victims. Murder victim family members have testified that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.

Problems with speeding up the process. Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. Speed up the process and we will execute innocent people.

Neither does life. The only difference is life costs taxpayers 20 times the amount of the average death sentence inmate, look it up. Prisons and prisoners are costing this country huge. Just in welfare alone for single mothers that have children with fathers in prison that dont pay support or fathers that arent supporting their wives and children.

Death.

I did what I did for a reason. And I don't regret it. If you are guilty enough to be put away for life, that is probably good enough for death too.

While you can claim death doesn't solve the problem, it could get rid of possible repeat offenders. If one of these life sentences escapes, they have nothing to lose. They got life in prison, so all they could possibly take is their life. So, no problem.

For myself, I would not want to be in that position, but having seen life prisoners, who still appreciate the gift of life, I would say life.

If you ever meet the family of a Murder victim, you will probably understand the death penalty.

DEATH. DEATH. DEATH.

I'd prefer living, especially because I wouldn't do anything bad (like murder or rape somebody). I wouldn't mind dying naturally, though.

Life in prison doesn't solve the problem, either. If you kill somebody, why do you deserve to live? You deserve to die if you intentionally kill somebody. There is always a chance that they can get out of prison. If somebody gets the death penalty, the person has to suffer with the thought of dying, and they go to hell.

Let's say your mom was raped, stabbed, and cut apart while still alive. Would you want the person who did that to actually live? I didn't think so.

IF YOU KILL SOMEBODY, YOU MUST DIE.

Life in prison costs more to taxpayers. it costs thousands a year to house prisoners (more for women due to medical costs).

For myself? Im a wimp, ill admit it, id rather death cuz i know jail wont suit me!

And i think life is worse, the torture of every day, in and out. And assuming you're in for something bad enough to get life, you probably arent able to work while you're iin there.

I'd rather have life in prison. But then again sometimes a life like that isn't worth living. For some, life in prison is worse than death. I'd rather live, but insanely so, than die. =)

I'd rather have the death penalty than be sentenced to the rest of my life in prison.

What's the point? If thats all I have to look forward too, just kill me already!

with the death penalty the pain is over but with life in prison you would have to live with what you did forever

i would rather have life in prison. i don't think i could live knowing that in a few hours they were going to give a shot that would kill me. that would drive me insane. so i think i could live in prison for the rest of my life. maybe if i have good behavior in 50 years they might let me out. who knows it could happen.

I would rather die because then I wouldn't be miserable for the rest of my life. It would just be over with you know what I mean?
