Question:
Don't you think Catholics and Jews share a lot in common?

i mean, communion and confirmation are basically like ba mitzvah.

lent is like kosher, and both are religions that used to be the standard but became less popular than the faiths that sprung out of them.

Yes.

The Jews are our older sisters and brothers in faith.

The Catholic Church officially teaches:

When she delves into her own mystery, the Church, the People of God in the New Covenant, discovers her link with the Jewish People, "the first to hear the Word of God.

The Jewish faith, unlike other non-Christian religions, is already a response to God's revelation in the Old Covenant.

To the Jews "belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ"; "for the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable."

Neither all Jews indiscriminately at that time, nor Jews today, can be charged with the crimes committed during the Passion of Jesus Christ. The Jews should not be spoken of as rejected or accursed as if this followed from Holy Scripture.

Not really, although both are Abrahamic faiths.

JUDAISM

- says that no human can ever die for the sins of others

CHRISTIANITY

- says that Jesus died for the sins of mankind

JUDAISM

- says that all humans are born pure, and innocent

CHRISTIANITY

- says that all humans are born with 'original sin'.

JUDAISM

- says that G-d would never allow/enable a 'virgin birth'

CHRISTIANITY

- says that Mary gave birth, though a virgin

JUDAISM

- says that no man gets a 'second coming'

CHRISTIANITY

- says that Jesus will have a 'second coming'

JUDAISM

- says that every human should speak directly to G-d

CHRISTIANITY

- Jesus claims in the 'new testament' that the 'only way' to G-d is via him

JUDAISM

- says G-d is one, indivisable, cannot be separated into three aspects/incarnations

CHRISTIANITY

- speaks of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

JUDAISM

- says that we are ALL equally G-d's children

CHRISTIANITY

- says that Jesus was 'god's son' above all others

JUDAISM

- has no concept of 'hell'

CHRISTIANITY

- *some* Christians non believers to 'hell'

JUDAISM

- has no 'devil', the Jewish 'satan' is just an ordinary angel, under G-d's control

CHRISTIANITY

- describes 'satan' as a devil and 'fallen' angel

JUDAISM

- the 'messiah' will be a normal, mortal man who must fulfill all the Jewish messianic prophecies in one normal, mortal lifetime

CHRISTIANITY

- Jesus was the 'messiah' and will fulfill the prophecies when he 'returns'

JUDAISM

- says that the righteous of ALL faiths will reach 'gan eden' or 'garden of eden'.

CHRISTIANITY

- *some* Christians insist that only those who 'know Christ' can reach heaven

JUDAISM

- forbids Jews from trying to convert anyone to Judaism; we do not actively seek out converts, but welcome converts to Judaism; it is then forbidden to remind a convert of their former status.

CHRISTIANITY

- believes in actively 'witnessing' and encouraging people to convert to Christianity

Also, Lent is a specific time period, whereas Kosher is a way of preparing food, killing food (cows, chickens, etc.), and preparing food (the kitchen and dishes/pans/etc. around you) as well as eating the food (no pork, etc.)

BTW - we do not view Jesus as a prophet (although Islam does); for those of use that believe he did exist, he was a radical young man among many radical young men at that time.

Yes. And it makes sense when you realize that Christianity is an amalgamation of Judaism, Paganism, Greek Mythology etc. Christianity was created by the Romans to appeal to the believers of the major faiths contained withing the Roman empire. The fact that Christianity kept the OT was appealing to the jews of the day and made it easier for them to convert. The Romans knew that a single religion could be a powerful unifying force for their empire, so Roman Catholicism (Catholic meaning all inclusive or everyone) was born.

Well, they both believe in the Old Testament! Christianity and Catholicism came from the Jewish faith. After all Jesus was a Jew and Catholics worship Jesus as the son of God!

The Catholic Religion came from the Jewish religion. I think the only difference is no Christmas for Jews since they don't believe in Jesus only God.

Considering that Jesus was a Jew, that the Jewish faith was given to the people by God, who also gave us the Christian faith, and since the early Christians were mostly Jews, I'd say yes they do.

I think so, but the Jews don't see Jesus in the same light as Catholics do...don't they believe he was just a great prophet or something?

Well.....the original Catholic (Jesus) was born Jewish.

Catholics don't hate Jews. We don't call them "our Jewish friends" for nothing.

We love everyone.
