My favorite is the annual Great Lakes Folk Festival in East Lasning, Mich. People from all over the country and different parts of the world go there to perform. They have several different stages, and you can hear an almost unlimited variety of music. And it's free.



They always have a beer tent, but we prefer to duck into a bar between shows. It's a major college town (Michigan State U), so there are plenty of bars.



But the point of the whole thing is the music. Most people, if anybody, aren't there to get drunk and rowdy.



And my hometown of Republic, Mich. (up near Lake Superior) has an annual "Ethnic Days" festival which celebrates the town's strong presence of Finnish heritage. But you don't have to be of Finnish heritage to attend.

St Stan's Festival. Nobody gives a rats behind about the rides or the food. Everybody is headed for the beer tent to get sloshed on real cheap beer. I stay away.

The only ones I know of are the State Fair and Renaissance Festival
