my roommate got a dui last week, he blew a .08. he was hoping after getting his MBA in accounting this dec , to be an fbi agent, but today i get a call from him crying and saying that his life is over and that it will be impossible for him to get top secret clearance now.

i told him that every will be ok and he will get the job he wants, but after doing some searching i found out that , in fact he is pretty much screwed. Is his chances of being an FBI done? should i tell him the truth and not sugar coat anything?
The court ruled nolle prosequi, but the fbi can still see it.
Also why are DUI's looked at so harshly. If the person (like my rommie) who didn't hurt anyone and blew right on the line (.08) be giving such a hard punishment. This has killed his dream. now i know its wrong and i made sure he understood that , but 1 mistake killing your hopes and dreams is just way to much. 1st time dui offenders should not be judge this harshly, esp, if no one was hurt.

It honestly doesn't matter if nobody got hurt... Your driving abilities are impaired when you are under the influence of alcohol and just one little mistake can hurt someone. Even though he blew on the line at .08, he's going to more than likely be screwed.. No law enforcement job, a lot of things he can't become. You should tell him the truth that way he doesn't have false hope.

The law is at 0.8 for a reason. The cop could have not been so strict but whats done is done.

Everyone makes mistakes from time to time, some worse than others... You just have to learn to live with your mistakes and move on. His life is far from over and he has plenty of things he can still do with his life that I'm sure he will enjoy.

well i mean, if the police let everyone off with a slap on the wrist, people would do it again and again, when the punishment is harsher people are less likely to commit that crime, i don't think its harsh, your friend should of thought about his fbi thing before drink driving. yes this time he may not have killed anyone, but what if he did? then what? and what if they did just give him a slap on the wrist and he thought to hell with it! and did it again and this time killed someone? think logically, theres people on the roads doing the right thing and they don't want their lives in danger because of drunk drivers. im sure there is some way your friend can get it cleared of his permanent record, he just needs to go the police station and talk about his options and so on.

Because he made a conscious decision to get behind the wheel of vehicle, knowing he still had alcohol in his system. DUIs often hint to drinking problems, and any sort of alcohol abuse is looked upon very critically, especially if you're hoping for a TS clearance. I personally wouldn't hire someone who has a trouble with alcohol, and makes incredibly poor, and dangerous, decisions. I wouldn't even think about trusting them with information requiring a TS clearance.

No not at all idiot. If anything, the punishment should be more severe. Drunk driving is the cause of so many deaths. Just learn to take a taxi or have a sober driver.
