Question:
Do you ever think of Canada as a future super-power?

I hate Justin T and current Canada but I see a lot of potential. They are the second largest country in the world, and have a fast immigration rate. In the future I can see it becoming a superpower. China and India have over a billion people, but they struggle with supporting such a large population. Basically the only reason Canada is not a super power now is because of it's small population. That will change drastically in the future.

No.

The Immigration rate won't ever - (at least not in the lifetime of anyone reading this now) bring Canada close enough to having the necessary population to be a superpower by any definition of the word.

The current population is around 37 million people. For the last decade the immigration rate is about 250K persons per year. Now one could look at that and say OK...you're gaining a million every 4 years,,but...at the same time people are dying (and as the baby boomers get older the death rate is going to take a spike) plus not everyone who immigrates here stays here; some return to their home countries or move elsewhere.

The problem with allowing more immigrants in is (among other things) ..immigration costs money to both federal and provincial governments' federal governments bear much of the cost of processing and vetting immigration applications and providing financial aid in some cases to new immigrants; provincial governments have to provide services- that means finding more money for health care and other services. A lot of this money is borrowed, so governments have to weigh what immigrants add to the economy vs, what the immigration programs cost (and when to expect a "payback"). It's neither practical or possible to simply, say double the number of immigrants without upsetting the apple cart somewhere.

Another reason is it's going to get harder to be a "superpower" as other economies start catching up (there's only room for so many); India has a large population and has made major leaps technologically and industrially over the last few decades; it's become more of a global player after working hard to free itself from the image of being rather primitive by western standards to an emerging economic power.

And remember, Canada WAS a military superpower with the 3rd largest navy and 4th largest air-force on Earth as a result of the Second World War.

Because that's hardly the only kind of superpowerdom there is. Like the kind that Canada is now.

Earning friendships gains - and has gained - Canada far more power & influence than bombing foreign cities ever did.

Do note that Canada, in spite of the ability to do so, and the know how is the only one of the WW2 winning powers not to build nuclear weapons.

Not ever, well, not for a few decades.

We do not have the population to back it. We do not have the financial capital to build the ships, airplanes and tanks.

And we don''t have a reason to. We are loved the world over. Any country would come to help us in time of need.
