Why do people always want to hear the bad news first?

You know when someone says that they need to tell you something and it involves good and bad news, they ask which one you'd like to hear first. I've noticed that most of the time, people want to hear the bad news first instead of the good news.
Why is that?

Because then they will not be just thinking about what kind of bad news you have to tell them and they can enjoy the good news more.

The reason for this is because the bad news maybe bad so they want to hear it first and usually most of the time the good news has something to do with he bad news to turn it around

Because the good news will make them feel better after they hear the bad news

When you hear the bad news you wanna hear what you did not expect. Most likely the the good news is easy to cope with if you expect it or not. I like hearing the bad news first because I would like to hear that problem first and the good news can become secondary because im sure its nothing that is strenuous or not easily hard to accpet.

So that the good news can make the bad news seem a bit better than if you presented the bad news last.

Maybe when they get the bad news they are sad, but when they gt the good news they can be happy again, if it was the other way around it would go good news from already being happy to bad new to being sad for the rest of the day.

because after hearing the bad news the good news may cheer you up rather to hearing the good news and the bad news letting you down

well me personally i would want to hear the bad news first so that way the goo news is hopefully good enough to cheer me up. if you hear it the way around, the bad news may be something really bad/serious like someone dying in the family. for instance say i asked you wanted to hear first and then good news was you were getting 10,00 dollars inheirted to you and the bad news was you were getting fired from your job. wouldn't you rather hear the bad news first?

The good news makes the bad news not as bad?
Or the bad news ruins the good news if it is said after.

any positiveness that would come from the good news would be immediately crushed by the bad news. plus i guess it just feels better to hear something good after you have been let down. and if the person told u the good news and you werent impressed, where do they go from there? good question tho that is interesting

Because if you hear the good news first and then the bad news it would ruin the good news .. You'll forget all about the good news.

Because then the good news can possibly be better or make the bad news not bad anymore.

Because the good news makes you a little more optimistic after hearing the bad news.
As opposed to feeling like bittersweet because your good news was ruined.
It shouldn't make any difference, but perception is 90% of everything.

It gets it out of the way so the good news seems even better. The good news is a little bit of a relief.

Saving the best for last. Once the talk is done, they don't want to leave a bad taste in their minds. They want to remember the good news more than the bad.

Because they are hoping that the Good News will triumph over the Bad News, and make the bad news sound like less of a problem...or at least..that's why I do it! :) Hope this helped! :)

I'm guessing (This is why I would) it's because whichever one they hear second, they'd pay more attention to, so they want to get the bad part out of the way first.

because, they want to be cheered up, after they hear the bad thing by the good thing. instead of being made feel bad after they hear the good thing?

reverse phycology i guess.
i always want to just get the bad news over with FIRST so then after i can easy forget about that and take the good news.
idk that i just how I am about that kind of thing.

If something is good, then it doesn't need fixing or immediate attention. However, If something is going bad then it may need to be addressed as soon as possible, and is wanted to be heard first.
2009-04-10 21:01:27 UTC
so after the bad news the good news will cheer them up :)

because they get to hear devastating news that may kill something inside of them and then they hear the good news that brings a smile to their face.
