I mean don't people realize that the car that they are driving, factories, etc. is putting out way more harmful fumes into the atmosphere? I realize if you are a non-smoker the smell isn't that pleasant to be around. Like that town in California that totally banned smoking even don't you think that is a little overboard/extreme?

Yes I agree!! This blasted no smoking thing is getting rediculas, Here in Louisiana as of Jan 1 all restaurants will now be smoke free and virtually all work places also, I don't know about you but when the restaurants serves alcohol I needed my smokes also driving down the road will get you a ticket for smoking if you have a kid in the car with you. What the hell is this country coming to it is to me a violation of our civil rights!!!! Don't get me wrong I do respect the fact that there are people out there that don't smoke, but my point is simple I feel like the govenment I trying to take over our lives so they can have absolute rule over us that is to me starting to sound alot like socialism or even more like comnuism and look what happens there!!!

Im from Ireland and we have a no-smoking ban in public places. when this us introduced people where up in arms, especially in the pubs (as you may know we use pubs as a home away from home) and there were more people against the idea even the non-smokers, no-one wanted the government to tell us what to do. But after a while we just lived with it and id say only a very minority would actually disagree to it now. pubs have built very nice outdoor facilities in order to keep their customers happy. and it great now being in a smoke free, smell free areas. Recently we went on hols to wales, we were in a family run centre (pontins) and we were amazed that adults were allowed smoke inside their facilities especially the entertainment halls where little children were being entertained. I think smoke free zones are great and im a smoker. but to take it further and introduced it to towns it so extreme its ridiculous as you say especially when fumes from cars/factories etc are poluting our enviroment and our air.

i think people are just way too sensitive about allot of things these days and just need to relax and stop wining and complaining i would use another word but kids might be reading this. I do like to enjoy a good smoke after a good meal sometimes but I have kids and a young 5 month old at that I don't like to take them into a smoky restaurant. as far as public out door places go; its public and its out doors so the air will dissipate it quickly most people just want something to complain about and your an easy target. and a nother thing most smokers already know the risks about smoking they just choose to ignore it or just don't care.

People have lost there freakin minds with the whole smoking thing. I mean, I am not even a smoker and I hate that you can't smoke in bars or on the sidewalks. What happened to yall's rights? Holy hell this is still America...know what I mean?

I think it's a bit like throwing out the baby with the bath water...an old saying that is proven right a lot. A lot of the people who smoke now, mostly started a while back, when they didn't know what it could do to them, and now they're addicted. You can't make people un-addicted by telling them they should be or they have to move. This doesn't apply to people who have started since the 80s. They knew better from day one, and chose to do it, so they deserve whatever happens to them.

Being a smoker, yeah, I feel that prejudice and kick in the shins every time I light up. However, I can't, and won't, smoke in my own home or car, because my family has asthma. Guess how they got it? From me. So, maybe we smokers just need to open smoking clubs/bars, when non-smokers are not allowed. Hey...that's a thought...I could make millions....
anonymous
2006-12-02 11:28:04 UTC
No, it is not too extreme. No one is stopping you from smoking on or in your own property. They just want you to be conscious of not inflicting your smoke on other people.

I smoked for 25 years. I had to quit because I could no longer breathe well, and was passing out from just a 5 minute walk to the local mall. Within a week of quitting smoking, all those symptoms went away.

With me, it is much more serious than "the smell isn't that pleasant to be around"! If I have to inhale more than 10 breaths of second-hand smoke, all those symptoms that made me quit come back. I find myself having to sit down on the sidewalk instead of passing out because my lungs just WILL NOT tolerate second-hand smoke.

You too may reach this point in your life. I sincerely hope that you don't. But smoking related illnesses are still one of the highest causes of mortality in North America. We need to break this cycle. People are dying unnecessarily early because we have spent 100 years poisoning ourselves and others.

I'm wondering why the drug companies do not work on finding a drug that will completely cure our cigarette cravings. Or do we already have this ability, but the cigarette companies are paying them off to keep it under wraps?

NO! I look forward to the Houston smoking ban, to take effect in September.

Smoking kills. Second hand smoke kills. There is no question about it.

When I go clubbing, if I do not shower when I get home at 3 AM, before I go to sleep to get all the nasty smoke out of my hair and off my body and leave my clothes in the garage to wash later I have a migraine and throw up all the next day. Smoke has given me migraines all of my life.

As smoking has eased out of the workplace and then restaurants and now all public building including clubs, I CHEER!!!

PS: In Houston, foster parents are not allowed to smoke in their home or cars or take foster children into smokey places!!!!! I just heard that on the radio yesterday..........and there have been no complaints.

2006-12-02 11:24:24 UTC
Actually, I do agree with you. I am a non-smoker, and personally I don't like the smell of it. But It is a life's preferance. It's just that as a medic student, I see so much emphasis on the danger of smoking, even with so much evidence stacked against it, with million of dollars spent on campaign to defeat it, when a person refuses to quit smoking, it's his right.

2006-12-02 11:25:54 UTC
My dad died of lung cancer at the age of 48 after smoking for 36 years so...........

NO

I don't think any laws banning smoking are too extreme.

One person's rights end where another's begins.

Even if you designate certain areas in restaurants, bars, etc for smoking/non-smoking the smokes still makes its way into the other areas. That also subjects children and people with allergies to this smoke.
pkingman1274
2006-12-02 11:25:12 UTC
absolutely, 100% not, smoking and secondhand smoke is the number 1 preventable reason for premature mortality. Why can't smokers respect other peoples rights to go into a restaurant without having to breath in some selfish son of a bitches nasty habit? Why should the public pay the price for their nasty habits? Health coverage is expensive, are the smokers going to help us pay our bills?? If you don't care about your own health, fine, but let the rest of us have the option of breathing in smoke free air.

I completely agree.. it's actually very stupid... It's like they are violating smokers rights... and that town in california went completely over board with the whole issue.. It's like they dont seem to want to check into the other hazzards that's filling the air, it's just easier if they jump right in on the smokers.. makes no sense to me...

Hi there...

Yeah, I do agree with you. There are a whole lot of bars and stuff that are completely non smoking now, and that makes it no fun! I am not a smoker, but it is still part of the way that the world turns! Thanks!

I do. I agree 100% with what you are saying, I mean, I would never smoke, but I feel bad for smokers, who can't do anything, and are constantly getting criticized.

2006-12-02 11:25:55 UTC
No I dont think that..smoking effects not just smokers but everyone around them and it is said that second-hand smoke is just as bad if not worse. I understand smokers have "rights" but so do non-smokers!

yeah they just banned smoking in bars where im from. how can you sit in a bar and tell some one thier smoke is killing you while at the same time destroying your own liver alcohol. i can understand restraunts. people might not want to smell it while they are eating or not want thier kids around it. but in a bar, comon.
