Ok,so I want to arrange all of my digital photos and put them into separate folders, but I'm stuck at how to do it. I want to categorize them according to what is on the picture but I am really stuck. This may be a dumb question, but it has bugged me for a long time.
Ok,so I have some folders that I have already made up.One of the folders is labled "My Cedar Point Pictures" and another one is labled "Pictures of my sister."
I have some photos of my sister at cedar Point,so where would I put them???
(Please don't tell me to make a folder with my sister at Cedar Point because I would have to make many "odd" folders for pictures that I have no idea where to put)....So anyway, where would you categorize a picture like that?
(I had NO idea what category to put this under)

The major problem with Folders is - you can not put the same photo to multiple folders. So if you need to classify an image with several criteria - Windows Explorer and Folders are useless.

This is where you need to start use a photo management software tool. There are a bunch of image organizers on the market. I used PicaJet for a long time, but recently switched to Daminion. Single-user Daminion version is free (server-based version costs money).

- Install the Daminion from their web-site (http://daminion.net) and import your photos

- Create a category named "My Cedar Point Pictures" and the second category named "My sister".

- Now select the pictures of your sister in Cedar Point and drag them to the first category, and then to the second category. That is.

Now you have just One file, but it assigned to Two categories without taking an additional place on your computer hard disk.

There are a lot of other nice features in Daminion, just download and try it.

I'd put that picture under "Outings/Vacations" or "Family: _________(name of your sister)"

or "Road Trips"

Here are a few category suggestions:

travel & vacations

heritage

weddings

parties & celebrations

holidays

religious events

births & birthdays

places

friends

meals & recipes

work

military

family & relatives

reunions

gatherings

sports

school

fun & play

colours

season

date;time;year

It might help to browse through your pictures first to get an idea of categories that are meaningful to you. For pictures that do not easily fit a theme, sort by other criteria such as individual: son, daughter, mom, etc. For some categories you may want to further sort with added criteria like person: birthday - son, daughter; heritage - mom, dad and so forth.

Or event: Holidays - Christmas, July 4.

Or time: Holidays - 2000, 2001. Or combine multiple criteria: Holidays - Christmas: 2000, 2001.

Think of it like a file structure on your computer. The level of detail for further sorting is up to you.i recommend that you only sub-divide a category that has lots of pictures.

When you're all done sorting, look at what's left. Now it's decision time. To keep or discard? It's often difficult to trash the left over items, but don't fret over it. For pictures that you're not sure about tossing, put them in their own container and label it with the date. In a year, see what items are still there and if you've used them or not. If you haven't, then consider discarding them.

Have fun organizing your photos!:))

The only answer is to get more and bigger hard drives and put copies of pictures into multiple folders.

You'll never find anything ever again though if you don't rename your pictures.

I usually rename like Cat001, Cat002, etc so the files stay in order. And my folders are labeled by the date I put them into my PC. 01-25-12, 05-21-10, etc.
