I am just curious....as this phrase appears in correspondence between my grandfather and his parents from around 90 years ago. The "wee dreadful house" in question now belongs to my aunt.

The first thing that comes to mind is the shoe from the Mother Goose rhyme about the old woman who lives in a shoe.
But then, reading that its a real house in your family--- I kinda lean more towards a small, damp cottage that needs ALOT of fixing up but has a lot of character and charm too. Something with an overgrown garden that was gorgeous once and would be again with the proper care and love.

a tiny bad house. Dreadful could mean, falling apart infrastructure. Dreadful could mean it is so small that it's difficult to live in. "wee" is a word the Scots use for small. dreadful means there is something the writer doesn't like about it. it could be anything.

A small cottage that looks dreary. Probably surrounded by a few old, evil looking willow trees. Dilapidated windows. Needed a pain job.
A house with a lot of problems.

A small house about 700 square feet, maybe a one room cabin, no indoor plumbing, no elecricity. Sounds fun to go camping in.

Hmm...I think of a house off in the middle of nowhere, and it's deserted and very shabby...just a mess really. Broken windows, creaky doors and steps, kind of eery also.
